What to do in Case of Identity Theft
If you are unfortunate enough to become a victim of identity theft you will need to know how to proceed in order to take action. There are a number of identity theft worksheets on the Internet. They do vary from one to another but all are highly useful in that they explain how to proceed and have spaces in which to record all relevant details.
There are four primary steps that you should take in the case of identity theft. First of all you should immediately cancel payment of stolen checks and notify the three main credit bureaus, your creditors, the Federal Trade Commission and the Police in order to file a report.
One company, which deals in identity theft is called Citi Identity Theft Solutions and they not only recommend that you take these appropriate steps but have a worksheet that explains exactly what you should say to each authority. This worksheet is very useful as it has space for noting down names of people and places contacted, dates of contact and their telephone numbers and extra space for additional details and comments.
Another excellent resource, which is called an identity theft kit is offered by Stilman Bank and also includes a worksheet on which there is space to note down all details of people you have contacted along with all the dates. You can of course modify some of the details especially the place names, which may not be appropriate to your specific location. This kit also includes some very useful sample letters, making this an excellent resource indeed.
Finally, the Davis Police Department offers an identity theft worksheet, which starts off with a brief overview of the normal procedures to follow. There is space on which you can make a note of all details such as names and dates for credit bureaus that you contact as well and has a section in which you can fill in details when you contact the relevant authorities such as banks, credit card companies and the Federal Trade Commission. There is space on which to record all relevant names and contact numbers, your own account number and details about your losses. You can also write your own full account of the incident too.
This small selection of worksheets are but an example of what is available on the Internet and they are included to give you a basic idea as to how to proceed if you do become a victim of identity fraud. Have a look at them and select the one that is right for you.
