The reason they can do this is because they are able to attract enough visitors to their web sites that purchase items through banner advertising from affiliate companies. This allows them to offer a portal to anyone looking to sell items via the Internet. The selling on eBay still makes sense though, and it's best to diversify rather than putting all of your eggs and one basket. Even with the listing fees they are still the most popular online site for buying and selling, and that is still worth a lot when it comes to bringing traffic to your listings. Which allows you to have the opportunity to monotize the visitor in some fashion or another if you are using good business practices.
