Jobs and Overaged Applicants
Overaged applicants still have an edge over the younger ones. While some companies do prefer a younger workforce, older applicants can still land respectable, good-paying jobs. Older applicants can choose from different jobs that wouldn’t be looking into their DOB as a requirement. These jobs usually vary from specialization work like Medicine or Law practice.
In these fields, experience is an important factor for getting hired. As long as he is qualified, an older applicant can definitely apply for lectures and speaking engagements.
Here, first hand experience and knowledge will be a heavy determinant in getting the job, not the applicant’s age. Writing is also one field where older applicants have an edge over younger ones. Good writing skills and extensive writing experience will be the only requirement for writing novels, plays, script and even advertising tags.
Don’t fret if you’re turning 50 and are still applying for a job. What you should do is to gain confidence from you work experience, update you wardrobe and your knowledge and you’re ready to go off job hunting.
The following are tips to keep older applicants ahead:
1.Remember to highlight your accomplishments and achievements in previous employments over the years.
Remember that you are trying to sell yourself. So try to put in helpful information. Bear in mind that your resume will go through much scrutiny under the employer’s hands. You can try camouflaging your age by dropping your 1970’s employers. At the same time, they will be looking at previous posts that will be relevant in the job you are applying for so focus on putting in appropriate work achievements.
2.Read and learn. Enroll in refresher courses that will keep you abreast with the younger generation. This is especially important if you are in the professional sector.
While experience is always needed, it is always good to have knowledge to back you up.
3.Keep up to date with the latest trends and technology. This could spell the difference between employment and unemployment. Yes your own, old techniques serve you well, but you must know how to operate the basic gadgets you might be working with. Updating your wardrobe and coloring your hair can also mean a lot.
4.Let technology do the hard work. Instead of putting in too much time and effort visiting employers, search the World Wide Web for job vacancies. Use search engines to get information about possible jobs in your profession or field of interest. There are thousands if not millions of jobs posted on the internet everyday, who knows? One might be just perfect for you. Get a job aggregator (a free search engine) to alert you of any posts within your criteria
5.Keep an aggressive attitude and a sense of urgency. Let your employer know that you want the job and that you are fit for the job. Let him know that you’re not too old to learn new things and that you have as much energy as any 20-something applicant.
