Your occupation and  your car Insurance

Your occupation can make a great deal of difference in  the amount you pay for your insurance premiums. While there are statistical reasons for both the low end of the range and the high end of the range, if you are aware of the reasons for the rates, you will be in a better position to make changes to lower your auto insurance premium rate.

Scientists pay the lowest rates of any car insurance premium.  On an average, a scientist will pay only $870 in annual premiums. People  who are retired pay the second lowest rates at $920 for the annual average.  A third group of people who also pay rates at the low end of the scale is navigators and pilots.

At the other end of the rate spectrum are those in occupations which pay the highest insurance premiums.  A business owner is the most expensive occupation to insure, with an annual premium of $1400.  Executives pay the next highest rates with an average of $1,375 annually.  The third group at the high end of the scale are judges, lawyers, and attorneys.  Their annual average is $1370.

So with opposite extremes ranging from $870 on the low end to $1400 on the high end, it's pretty obvious which occupation would be the most advantageous from a financial standpoint.

LOW INSURANCE RATE OCCUPATIONAL CHARACTERISTICS

The characteristics of individuals and the occupations which they hold where low car insurance rates are common include attributes such as the following:

Low Stress - Their occupations are usually those which are considered to be low stress.  There is not the pressure to succeed or to complete a project in a fixed amount of time.

Safety of others - The safety of those around them is stressed in their occupational training.  Sometimes their personal driving record can make the difference if they will be allowed to follow the occupation.  A blot on the driving record may very well cost them their job.

Public transportation - The occupation which they follow is one in which they often use public transportation.  This is not necessarily public transport in the sense of owned by the government, but that used by the public such as the earlier mentioned airline pilots.

Meticulous - Many drivers in occupations with low insurance rates are generally considered to be extremely detail oriented.  This personality affects their driving habits.

HIGH INSURANCE RATE OCCUPATIONAL CHARACTERISTICS

On the other side of the fence are those in occupations where the insurance rates are at the high end of the scale.  These occupations include:

Stressful occupations  - Their jobs typically are notable for the stress level incurred.   Their decisions may affect others financially, health wise or in safety aspects.

Time in their vehicle - Drivers in occupations which require that they spend a higher amount of time than average are found to pay higher insurance rates.

Cell phone usage  - Those people in occupations which pay higher insurance rates often use the cell phone more when driving than the average driver.

It's important to understand that in many cases it is not the occupation which causes the high interest rate, but the character traits of the person who is in that particular occupation.
