Car insurance for your teen

Once your teenager obtains a driver's license there's a new found sense of freedom, both for you and for the youngster.  You may be able to cut down the number of chauffeur trips you need to make, and the teen will appreciate being able to go somewhere without parental chaperons.

However, with the license comes a lot more responsibility.
Teens who drive are especially vulnerable to auto accidents and auto insurance for a teenager is accordingly higher than for an adult.  A 16 year old driver is ten times more likely to be involved in an automobile accident than are drivers age 30 to 59

In order to get affordable auto insurance with a teen driver in the family, there are several things which you can do to reduce the rates.  First, the teen must understand the importance of maintaining a clean driving record.  Urge them to understand that driving is a privilege, not a right and they must maintain a record of no accidents, no speeding tickets, and no traffic violations.

If the teenager is required to earn at least part of the insurance premium by working at an after school job.  Not only will they better appreciate the cost of the policy, but working the job helps to teach responsibility and good job skills.
If you purchase insurance which has a higher deductible rate, your insurance premium will be reduced accordingly.

The type of vehicle which your teen drives will have a huge impact on the amount of insurance which you will pay.  If you are buying a vehicle, choose one that has extra safety features.  Insurance for a well built car that is not in the sports class or higher risk rating class will be priced lower.

In many U.S states and some Canadian provinces there are graduated licensing laws.  The specifics are slightly different in each jurisdiction, but the underlying philosophy restricts new drivers by limiting their driving rights.

These restrictions may include nighttime driving restrictions, zero alcohol tolerance restriction, vehicle occupant restrictions and others.  Often an additional test after a specific time period is required before removing them from the restricted driver classification.

Another way to reduct the insurance cost for your teen is to purchase a stand-alone policy from an insurance company that specializes in teen insurance policies.  They won't appear as a driver on your policy, but carry their own insurance. Teens insured under stand alone policies will often have concessions or restrictions placed on the driving habits, such as driving education classes, no nighttime driving and other provisions which help to reduce the risk factors and thus keep premiums lower for teenage drivers.

Only the first step in a lifetime of driving is completed when the teenager gains their driver's license.  Ensuring that the youngster maintains responsible behaviour both in driving habits and work habits is important.  Researching the internet for lower insurance policy costs will help the teen better understand the price of the privilege of driving.
